Beliefs

You may or may not know that Jeremy Wind was ordained this weekend. Too you non-catholics that is a huge deal. It means he is officially a Priest. It was really cool. The idea of spending the weekend with a bunch of Priests may make some a little... uneasy. Hey! I was one of those people only a couple years ago, but that's all changed.

After doing all this Catholic pre-marriage meetings and interview stuff I gotta say my outlook has changed a lot. For a loooooong time I had a pretty negative view of religion in general. There was just a painful deluge of negative publicity for Christianity. Catholicism, Protestants, and Evangelicals are all very different, but if one of them looks bad they all look bad. Now I don't want to mince words but Evangelic has become as close to a dirty word as you can get over the last 8 years, and why is that? President Bush. Has a President ever been more in bed with an ideology than G dubbs is with the Evangelical right? Seems like any time he is asked to explain his reasoning he pulls out his belief in God or his fear that terrorists may soon be standing in our kitchens wielding machetes.

Of course there is more to it than that. As kids age, some question what the purpose is of going to church and having faith. Without finding answers that jive with our personal reasoning systems the natural response is to rebuke things we feel can't be explained. Well I am not about to carry a Bible everywhere or slap you in the face with scripture, but I am starting to see tangible value of having faith.

At Jeremy's Ordination there were easily 50 Priests, and of the ones I talked with, they were seemed like cool guys. Now after some reflection, and meeting last night with a local Priest about our impending marriage, I feel the Catholicism deserves a second change. My childhood Priest; Father Orr, Jefferson Priest; Father Reis, and Alameda Priest; Father Ray all seem like great guys. Beyond that they seem grounded and realistic. While that doesn't bring into the fold with everything preached in the Bible, it may be enough to make me start going to church and really listen to sermons. As with everything in life, you can't believe you hear, and that which you do believe, keep the salt nearby because nothing is for certain.
