Kevin Smith is the man whose first film, Clerks , bears the most responsibility for my love of movies and film. The rest of his films carry different levels of reverence in my DVD collection. Some I believe are better than Clerks, a couple don't deserve to have their titles read in the same sentence. Still Clerks was the atomic bomb that ripped my adolescent world apart with what the average film fan is capable of. Over the years the varying quality of Sir Smod's films have made my fandom waver, but at all times I respected the man whose brain birthed Clerks. Even at his worst Kevin Smith always seemed to produce something that kept him near and dear to me; his podcasts , his speaking engagements, his comics, and generally just being an all around awesome guy. While scouting a location on campus today I came across this random box outside a science lab. Now all I have to do is write a science fiction movie to go with it! Isn't this thing the coolest? Oh and by the way, I posted this with a creative commons license. Steal it and use it!

Since Tuesday, the Mega Million jackpot has grown from $500 million to currently $640 million, and before we get to far down this post yes, I am one of the "fools' who threw a couple bucks away for a shot at a historic payday. This morning the Mega Million jackpot was the top story on CBS This Morning and they mentioned over 1 billion tickets would be sold by lotto time tonight. Plenty of people think we're idiots but is there a cheaper escape than a $2-3 escape. Of course the chances of winning are the first thing people mention when calling you out on foolish spending. As it turns out, I am somewhat of a rare bird. Apparently not many people listen to NPR podcasts while working out. Not too many runners are pumping Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me or getting pumped jamming to  Marketplace while doing squats. Must be the lack a driving beat... Either way, podcasts are my jam. If you ever interrupt me mid-run and listen closely you'll hear my headphones spilling out the soothing sounds of someone giving their two cents in a podcast. Could be Sklar Bro Country , Filmspotting , PTI or one of many others. The point being, rock n roll is lame, give me the AM dial. After far too long a wait, Marieta and I finally watched " The Muppets ,"the new Muppet movie spearheaded by Boberg family favorite, Jason Segel . I was dying to see this film all of last year and then come Thanksgiving things kept getting in the way of getting to theater to see it. Probably the biggest deterrent to actually paying the $8-12 admission fee was my parents' one-word review; boring. While I could not believe it, it definitely gave me slight pause. Now after watching the film I can proudly say... they were kind of right. Before I get into why, how about a couple trailers? Doesn't that look like a lot of fun? Energy and gags galore? Basically a Muppet version of the Blues Brothers movie ? That sounds like a no-brainer barrel of laughs, and by all accounts it could have been... Like many others I am a man addicted to technology. I carry a digital camera with me pretty much everywhere I go, I watch movies a lot, I am on my computer constantly, professionally I am a "Multimedia Specialist," and like many others I am constantly fiddling with my cell phone. So participating in National Day of Unplugging is akin to going cold turkey on a super addictive narcotic. I will earnestly try to power down tomorrow but there will have to be exceptions. Marieta has us going to a documentary screening in the afternoon so there's some power usage (car to and screening of). Also I am a student at the University of Denver through their online grad school so I have some homework to deal with there. With those two exceptions I THINK I can do this. Books are good, maybe I can shoot some hoops outside if its not raining, go for a walk around Greys Lake... oh boy. It's gonna be hard. After pushing it off for years I finally watched the entire canon of Joss Whedon's Firefly. In four days I watched Serenity , every episode of Firefly , and then Serenity again.  Fans of the Firefly universe would probably ask why I waited so long, but I would have to say I am glad I did wait. The show has been gone for nearly 10 years and the movie is six years old. Plenty of time for it age and either become dated, thankfully it came no where close. That show, and adjoining movie, needs to be carved into the science fiction Mount Rushmore along with Star Trek and Star Wars. If you think that's too far, can we agree that it is easily the best science fiction show of the last decade. I'd venture to say it is the most believe-able space venturing show I have ever seen. No wizardy or puppets (Star Wars), no aliens or abhorrent techno-jargon (Star Trek), no robot uprising (BattleStar).
